Follow The Reader: Cozy hideaway on Tomales Bay

Sunday, February 6, 2005

We've tried a number of lodgings in Inverness and Point Reyes Station over the years, but our hands-down favorite is a quiet little hideaway up in Marshall called the Inn On Tomales Bay, run by "Captain Bob" Kahn and his affable wife, Lynnette. The inn has three spacious guestrooms, each with a private outdoor entrance, fireplace, sitting area and gorgeous bay view - and no TV's.

The outstanding breakfasts are served in guestrooms and feature local, organic ingredients (the inn has its own resident chickens). The venerable Tony's - the spot for barbecued oysters is a short drive down the road.  Other eating places are also a short distance away.

To work off these gourmet excursions, there are ample opportunities nearby for hiking, beachcombing and kayaking (including rentals). The area is also a special treat for birders. Tomales Bay serves as a flyway for thousands of migratory waterfowl.

". . . the perfect romantic Bay Area getaway. . . ." San Francisco Chronicle, August 14, 1994

". . . the Inn On Tomales Bay is picturesquely situated overlooking the water -- a paradise for 'birders' . . ." Marin Independent Journal, September 24, 1994

". . . lovely guest rooms perched in the trees just above the bay's rocky shore. The view through the trees, seen from the rooms' bay windows, is magnificent. Seals swim by, birds gather. The headlands provide a backdrop for the water show and a frame for the sunset. The rooms are so private and quiet you feel like you're in your own separate world." Napa Valley Register, February 18, 1996

"The Inn on Tomales Bay is located in the tiny hamlet of Marshall. It is surrounded by the bay and the rolling ranch lands of Marin County. A more romantic and peaceful setting would be hard to find. The sunrises over the grazing pastures and the sunsets over the bay are spectacular. And all of this can be seen from the privacy of your own room." San Francisco Examiner, March 17, 1996

". . . my wife and I . . . felt as if we were hundreds of miles away from the hustle and bustle . . ." San Francisco Examiner, October 5, 1997
